Major scientific interests

My primary education is that of a zoologist and ecologist. After a brief period in limnology I worked on the autecology of various freshwater fishes, using experimental setups in microcosms in combination with field data from natural populations; the model organisms were mainly spined loaches. Studies on the spined loach (Cobitis taenia) revealed a large, but hidden diversity under this name, including the widespread presence of unisexually reproducing lineages of hybrid origin. Starting with analyses of the spined loaches in Germany and the Czech Republic via the diversity of Cobitis in Europe towards the genera and families of loach fishes worldwide, my work focused more and more on the diversity and evolutionary history of freshwater fishes in Europe and Asia. The analyses combine phylogenies that were reconstructed on the base of molecular genetic data (by colleagues with training in genetic techniques) with cytogenetical, morphological and geological data, in order to identify the impact of separation events, range extensions, cases of hybridisation and of polyploidisation as well as the climatic, tectonic and geographical changes in Eurasia during Cenocoic. At the end it is possible to reconstruct the whole evolutionary history of the analysed fishes and to conclude on the relative importance of the different evolutionary mechanisms.

Currently, together with other colleagues from the Laboratory of Fish Genetics we focus on the investigation of origin and stabilisation of a polyploid lineage within the family Botiidae (Cobitoidea) that appeared about 20 mya. Due to the complexity of the topic (particularly the high age of polyploid lineage), we apply a multi-method approach including analyses of DNA variability (sequencing, microsatellites), methods of classical as well as molecular cytogenetis, and transcriptomics.
