Biodiversity
research of selected groups of vertebrates, particularly amphibians and reptiles
from the Palearctic and Afrotropic ecozones using molecular-phylogenetic and
phylogeographic methods, evolutionary-ecological approaches; and conservation of
endangered species.
Systematics
and taxonomy had not been very popular in the scientific research in the recent
past. However, it has changed due to the problems of the global biodiversity
crisis during last years. The pressure of our over-engineered civilisation on
the global ecosystems has caused severe species decline – extinctions. That
begs for active conservation of species, which is, however, depending on proper
cognition of true biodiversity and evolutionary relationships among species.
Such knowledge can help in better understanding of ecological relationships in
the ecosystems and also streamline the applied conservation of the global
biodiversity. The tropics are one of the least-explored regions of the World,
especially the Afrotropics, where the biodiversity inventories and knowledge of
taxonomy of lower vertebrates, e.g. highly endangered amphibians, are poor and
therefore attract the attention for further studies.
